FBA Removals to a 3PL: A Seller’s Step-by-Step Plan

Prepare the warehouse before the first carton moves, control staggered arrivals, grade every unit, and plan the replenishment in parallel.

Quick answer: Create a return removal order in Seller Central using the 3PL’s exact receiving address, but do not submit until the warehouse has your removal ID, SKU list, expected quantities, grading rules, and fee schedule. Amazon may release units in many batches, so receive and reconcile each arrival separately.
FBA removals to a 3PL workflow

When moving FBA stock to a 3PL makes sense

A removal order transfers units out of Amazon’s fulfillment network to an address you control. Use it when aged inventory is accumulating storage charges, returns need inspection, a listing is suppressed or stranded, units need relabeling, or you want stock available for multiple sales channels.

If units are sellable, moving quickly, and attached to a healthy listing, removal is usually the wrong move. You pay the removal fee, lose Prime availability, and accept a potentially long transfer gap.

Choose the 3PL before the order starts moving

Removal cartons can arrive from several fulfillment centers, in batches, with limited notice. Ask the warehouse whether it regularly receives Amazon removals, can log partial arrivals against one removal ID, can inspect and relabel units, and can ship compliant cartons or pallets back to FBA.

Compare the full monthly cost rather than one storage rate. Request written pricing for setup, per-carton or per-unit receiving, inspection, photos, relabeling, repacking, storage, account management, outbound handling, pallet building, and contract exit.

Common 3PL warehouse fee benchmarks

Create the removal order correctly

  1. In Manage FBA Inventory, select only the SKUs and dispositions you intend to move.
  2. Choose Return, not disposal or liquidation.
  3. Enter the 3PL’s exact receiving address, including suite, dock, contact name, and phone number.
  4. Review the fee preview and confirm whether large orders should be split by SKU or condition.
  5. Send the 3PL the removal ID, SKU list, expected units, and instructions immediately.

Keep the listing closed or tightly controlled until physically inspected units are available. Selling quantities that are still inside a staggered removal creates cancellation and account-health risk.

Expect batches, then grade every arrival

Removal timing is variable. Amazon forum guidance commonly cites 10–14 business days for processing, while busy periods and large orders can extend much longer. Carrier time is additional, and a single order may arrive over weeks rather than as one shipment.

GradeConditionTypical action
ASealed and sellableRelabel if needed; return to FBA or another channel
BRepairable packaging or label issueRepack, rebag, relabel, and reinspect
COpen-box but functionalSell through an approved secondary channel
DDamaged, expired, or contaminatedPhotograph, document, claim, dispose, or liquidate

Require counts and photos for every batch, expiry and lot checks where relevant, and a deadline for decisions on exception units. Reconcile by removal ID and SKU rather than looking for one invoice or one delivery.

Plan the restock before the removal lands

Do not wait for the last removal carton before ordering replacement inventory. Production and freight can take longer than the removal itself. Decide whether new stock should go directly to FBA or to the 3PL for consolidation, prep, and relabeling.

  • Use air or express for a compact, high-margin relaunch where the listing is ready.
  • Use ocean for the bulk replenishment when the calendar allows it.
  • Confirm importer responsibility. The importer remains responsible for duties, fees, and compliance; a door-to-door quote does not remove that duty.
  • Check pallet and oversize rules. Heavy or bulky units change warehouse and FBA delivery costs.

A simple working timeline

WindowAction
Week 0Select the 3PL, agree on SOP and fees, create the order, share the removal file
Weeks 1–3Control listing quantity and watch for the first batches
Weeks 3–8Inspect, relabel, and return Grade A units in smaller FBA shipments
Weeks 8–14Reconcile shortages and decide the disposition of exception units
In parallelBook new production and freight against the target restock date

These are planning ranges, not promises. Peak periods and individual fulfillment centers can add weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an FBA removal to a 3PL take?

Amazon commonly cites 10–14 business days for pick, pack, and processing, but large orders and peak periods can take much longer. Add carrier delivery time and plan for staged arrivals.

Can I send a removal order directly to my 3PL?

Yes. Choose the return option and enter the 3PL’s receiving address. Confirm that address and send the warehouse the removal ID, SKUs, expected quantities, and grading instructions first.

Should I keep selling while the removal is in transit?

Usually not from the affected quantity. Units arrive in batches, so control or close the listing until inspected stock is physically available.

What does a 3PL charge to handle removals?

Pricing varies. Ask for a complete written quote covering receiving, inspection, photos, relabeling, repacking, storage, outbound handling, and exit fees.

Who pays duties when I restock from China after a removal?

The importer of record remains responsible. Confirm what the forwarder’s DDP price covers and who is named as importer before the shipment moves.

ForwarderOne does not operate the removal order. We coordinate the replacement shipment from China or Korea to your 3PL or FBA destination, including freight, customs, duties, and delivery under a defined DDP workflow.
