Sold as Set Label: When Amazon FBA Requires It

Learn when Amazon FBA requires a sold as set label, what wording to use, where to put it, how SIOC fits in, and how to avoid prep problems.

Quick answer: Use a sold as set label when the customer buys the components as one unit. Secure the complete set together, mark its outer packaging clearly, and keep the applicable product barcode visible. SIOC certification and set identification address different requirements.

Sketch of a bundled set and labeled cartons

A sold as set label tells Amazon's fulfillment center staff that several items belong together and must be received, stored and shipped as one unit. You need it when a customer buys the components as a single set or bundle. Amazon's packaging requirements give examples of acceptable wording: "Sold as set," "Ready to ship," or "This is a set. Do not separate." This guide covers when the rule applies, what to print, where to put it, how it differs from SIOC, and what else a set still needs before it leaves your supplier in China.

TL;DR

  • Use the label when two or more items are meant to be sold to the customer as one unit. Shipping them in the same carton is not the trigger.
  • Accepted wording includes "Sold as set," "Ready to ship," and "This is a set. Do not separate." Put it on the outside of the set's packaging, and package the items securely together.
  • SIOC (ships in own container) does not replace the set label. A SIOC set still needs set wording on its outermost packaging.
  • The set label is separate from your FNSKU barcode, shipping box labels, and any product-safety markings. Check all of them before the goods ship.
  • Fix labeling at the factory, not at the fulfillment center. Rework after arrival costs time and stock availability.

What "sold as set" means on Amazon

Amazon's guidance says products sold as a set, meaning multiple distinct items intended to be sold as one unit, must be marked on their packaging. The point is that fulfillment center personnel receive, store and fulfill the components together. Without the marking, a worker scanning a box sees several loose pieces and has no reason to think they belong together.

Think of a three-piece knife block, a kids' art kit with a case, a two-part skincare duo, or a multi-pack of identical units sold under one listing. The customer orders one thing and expects one box to arrive complete. Amazon's own seller material for other marketplaces says the same about multi-packs: units that are sets must carry a label stating they are received and sold as a single unit.

The trigger is the selling unit

The question is not how many items are in your carton. It is what the customer buys. If a shopper purchases the components as one set, the combined package is the sellable unit and must be identified that way. Amazon's bundling rules add that a bundle generally needs its own listing and a scannable barcode for the bundle, per the same Seller Central guidance.

A quick test:

Situation Set label needed?
Customer buys a 3-piece cookware set under one ASIN Yes
Customer buys a 6-pack of the same item under one ASIN Yes, the multi-pack is the sellable unit
Each item has its own ASIN and you ship 24 of them in a master carton No, the carton is a case pack, not a set
Two items with separate listings, shipped in one box for convenience No, and do not tape them together as if they were one

The last row matters. If you glue or shrink-wrap items that have separate listings, you create confusion at receiving and risk inventory mismatches.

Approved wording and where to put it

Amazon's seller blog says items sold as one unit should be packaged together and the outside marked with a label reading "Sold as set," "Ready to ship," or "This is a set, do not separate". Pick one phrase and use it consistently across your SKUs so your factory does not improvise.

Practical rules we give sellers:

  1. Package the set as one object. Every unit has to sit inside a single, secure package, a box, a sealed poly bag or shrink wrap, so nothing can fall out during handling. The same Amazon beginner guide states this requirement.
  2. Put the label on the outside. A worker should read it without opening anything. Place it on a flat panel, close to but not covering the product barcode.
  3. Keep the barcode scannable. The set label is a message to people. The applicable product barcode, whether an FNSKU or an approved manufacturer barcode, is what the system scans. Neither should hide the other. Our guide to FNSKU labeling and FBA prep from China shows a clean layout.
  4. Do not use "Sold separately" anywhere on the package. It contradicts the instruction you are trying to give and can confuse the person handling the unit.
  5. Use clear, readable print. Orange or bright stickers are common because they stand out, but the requirement is clear wording, not a color.

If the set is already in retail packaging

Many sets arrive from the factory in a printed gift box that is sealed. If the box is sealed and the contents cannot spill, the label goes on that outer box. If the set is held together only by a sleeve or a band, upgrade the packaging. A label cannot fix a set that comes apart.

Sold as set versus case packs and kits

Sellers often mix up three things: a set, a case pack and a kit.

  • A set is what the customer buys as one unit. It gets the set label.
  • A case pack is a carton of identical sellable units, packed for shipping. Amazon describes case-packaged products as having matching SKUs, conditions and equal quantities, generally packaged by the manufacturer. The units inside are separate sellable items, so you do not label them as a set.
  • A kit assembled by your supplier is a set if you list it as one.

If you want a production-side view of how kitting differs from case packing, this explainer on kitting and case packing helps you brief a factory. The takeaway for Amazon sellers: decide the selling unit first, then let the packing method follow.

SIOC packaging and the set label

SIOC means a sellable unit can ship safely in its own manufacturer packaging, without an Amazon overbox or extra prep. It is subject to Amazon's certification tests and labeling requirements. Sellers searching for Amazon SIOC requirements often assume it replaces other labels. It does not.

Amazon's March 2026 certification guidelines for Ships in Product Packaging say that when the sellable unit is a set, the outermost packaging needs set wording such as "Sold as set" or "Do not remove this outer packaging," in addition to the required scannable carton and item labels. Those guidelines are written for vendors in the packaging program, so check whether your account is covered. If it is not, the general FBA rules above still apply.

In short:

Sold as set label SIOC
What it answers Which items stay together Whether the unit ships without extra prep
Where it lives Outside of the set's packaging The packaging design and test results
Can one replace the other? No No

A set can be SIOC. A SIOC product can also be a set. You need to satisfy both.

Other requirements a set still has to meet

The set label solves one problem. These are the others we see on the same shipments.

Product-safety marking for children's products

Amazon's label is an operational instruction. It is not a legal product-safety marking. For children's products, the CPSC's policy says sets or pairs that function only as sets generally need tracking marks on one item or an integral part of the set, while separable items that can be sold separately generally need their own marking. If you sell children's items, confirm this with your manufacturer or a compliance specialist.

Tracking mark rules for sets and separable items

Batteries

Batteries can require product-specific packaging and dangerous-goods review in addition to the set label. Check Amazon’s guidance on packaging batteries for the battery type, and confirm the applicable transport requirements before shipping.

Poly bags and suffocation warnings

If you seal a set in a poly bag, the bag may need a suffocation warning. That is one reason bagged sets get rebagged at the warehouse. Our note on the poly bag suffocation warning spec lists what to ask your supplier to print.

Shipping box labels

Carton labels are separate from product labels. Amazon's older shipment checklist says shipping labels belong at least 1-1/4 inches from box edges and never over seams or corners, according to the FBA shipment checklist. That document carries an old expiry date, so confirm current placement rules in Seller Central. For the full picture, see our FBA packaging requirements guide and the walkthrough of shipment creation.

What goes wrong without the label

Amazon’s SIPP vendor guidelines warn that incorrect labeling, barcodes or item setup can cause receiving and prep problems, damage, and loss of SIPP certification. That warning applies to the packaging program; general FBA shipments also need correct labels and secure packaging. In plain terms:

  • A set gets split, and one component is stored as inventory while the rest sits elsewhere.
  • A customer receives an incomplete order, which means a bad review or a return.
  • Your units are held up during receiving while someone sorts out what they are.

For a seller running thin on stock before a holiday peak, a week of delay at receiving hurts more than the cost of a sticker.

Fix it at the factory, not at the warehouse

Once a pallet or carton leaves China, relabeling means paying for prep or doing it yourself in the US. A better routine:

  1. Send your supplier a one-page packaging spec for each set: the wording, the label size, the panel it goes on, and a photo of the finished unit.
  2. Ask for a pre-production sample and check it against your listing and barcode.
  3. Have the goods checked before they ship. Our guide to pre-shipment inspection in China explains how to catch labeling errors early.
  4. Confirm the applicable product barcode, set label and carton labels are present, scannable where required, and do not cover one another.

If you need help turning that into a shipment, our guide to shipping inventory from China to Amazon FBA covers the steps from pickup to check-in.

Our perspective

Most labeling problems we see are not complicated. They come from a gap between what the seller meant and what the factory printed. Sellers describe a set in the listing, then send the supplier a short message, and the factory does what is quickest.

Our perspective — overview diagram

We work with small and mid-sized Amazon sellers moving goods from China to US fulfillment centers, and our advice is consistent: treat labels as part of the product, not as an afterthought. Decide the selling unit, write the spec, and verify it before cartons are sealed. That costs far less than fixing units after they reach a fulfillment center, especially in the weeks before holiday sales when you cannot afford stock to be stuck.

This is also why we built our service around one workflow. When pickup, labeling checks, customs, duties and delivery are handled together, with a dedicated account manager, a label question gets answered before the shipment moves, not after.

Ship your sets with fewer surprises

If you are sending sets, multi-packs or bundles from China to Amazon, our Amazon FBA freight forwarding service covers pickup, FBA shipment labeling and delivery to the fulfillment center. We handle customs and duties in one DDP shipping workflow, so you can confirm the included charges and any exclusions before the goods ship. Tell us how your set is packed and we will flag labeling issues before it ships.

FAQ

Do I need a sold as set label if the box is sealed?

Yes, if the box is a set meant to be sold as one unit. Sealing keeps it from being opened, but the label is what tells staff not to split it. Some sellers on Seller Central say the label is unnecessary for sealed boxes, but Amazon's written guidance does not carve out that exception, so label it.

Can I write the wording by hand?

Amazon asks for clear marking on the packaging, and it lists wording rather than a specific sticker design. Printed text is safer because it stays readable through handling. Hand-written marks smear and are easy to miss.

Is a multi-pack of the same item a set?

If customers buy the multi-pack under one listing, it is the sellable unit and should be marked as a set. If each unit is sold separately and you are only shipping them together, it is a case pack and the set label does not apply.

Does SIOC mean I can skip the set label?

No. SIOC says the product can ship in its own packaging without extra prep. If that packaging contains a set, Amazon's Ships in Product Packaging guidance still calls for set wording on the outermost packaging.
